As opposed to hot-male

Which, I think I would prefer…

It wasn’t too long ago that hotmail and other web-based(?) mail programs were used to sign into/up to various ‘sites’ on the web because we didn’t want the world to know our real name or real statistics; we wanted to be a part of the fun, but not to endure targeted ads or ‘helpful’ improvements designed specifically for us through the use of algorithms and whatnots to ensure our experience is as rich and full as they want it to be.

All of that has, apparently, changed…

Now hotmail (and others) insist on ‘knowing’ who/m is using their services. They want a verification that you are who/m you say you are and you have only ONE account associated with any given phone number.

Whoa… wait a minute! Back the train up here. PHONE number? When did I agree to offer a phone number? As far as I can tell, it is MY choice whether or not I wish to ‘verify’ my account(s). And, as far as I can ascertain, they have not changed that stipulation. Oh, but wait!

Yes, now they need to verify you so they can alert you if anything untoward happens to your account, or if someone hijacks it and begins using it for nefarious purposes. So far, the only one hijacking my VERIFIED ALREADY account(s) are/is the conductor of the site itself; yup, Microsoft.

When I signed up to hotmail I wasn’t as web savvy as I am now (and that ain’t sayin’a whole lot!) and I happily punched in all my ‘real’ info; yup, even verified with a phone number. And since the induction of Windows 8, and subsequently 8.1, I have been requested three times to re-verify my account(s). I no longer care to share my ‘real’ info with them if they cannot keep it safe during upgrades.

I now have two ‘un-verified’ accounts while my verified ones gasp pathetically and cry, “Why? Why have you abandoned us? What did we do wrong?” Oh, my name is still real, but the verification of it will never be known, you’ll just have to take my word for it…

Now, to wait until Google decides to take the same stance…

Why do they ask us to verify if they are not going to store the information permanently?

I know I have been griping about this for a while, but it really irks me that I went through all the trouble of establishing myself (twice, actually) if they keep changing the rules, I’m quitting the game… I haven’t got the knowledge to beat them at their game, so I will just refuse to play…

Next time: Happier thoughts! (I have found and COMPLETED my novels series and am awaiting covers…)

Windows 8…

I just wish they had offered the choice! This may work well for their purposes, not so much for the general masses. (I have mass, and I consider myself a general (pain/nuisance…))

I am using Windows 8 because it arrived preinstalled. I don’t have the brains to figure out how NOT to use it and choose another operating system. (IS there another operating system?) That and I swore to myself I was GOING to learn it. Maybe ‘swore’ is a little strong… I determined that I could learn this. (I’m not sure WHY I decided this…)

It’s snowing outside and here I sit, inside, trying to figure out why this program or that program isn’t where it is supposed to be. Oh, gee – D’UH…gotta install it first… *sigh*. I should be making snowballs…

I REALLY do appreciate that I can listen to music now. It does make writing a lot harder, (listening to music)

(So does this flippin’ keyboard! Ack! Have to learn a new placement of keys and a different pressure to hit the keys with… That and figure out WHY the @ symbol is where the “ is supposed to be…???) REALLY, IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME FIX THAT I’D REALLY APPRECIATE IT! Thanking you in advance… (Update: between writing that and getting extra-cranky, I have managed to build a work-around for this issue… Clever when I need to be, ‘eh?)

I have discovered how to turn off “live-view”. Apparently, Windows-8 assumes I want to have everything open and constantly moving. I think they also want me to click the tiles to reach the pre-installed programs. I want to figure out how to DELETE e-Bay. For the rest, well, they are okay. I’m not deleting them yet. I haven’t figured out WHY I’d want them; but for now they can stay in the grid.

As I said I figured out how to turn off ‘live-view’, and how to make all the boxes the same size so it fits into a smaller space. (I also figured out how to make the Trash Bin HUGE… LOL… it’s the only thing on my desktop and it’s enormous! You could see it from space!)

What do I like about my new computer? From the time I press ‘Power’ until I type my password? TEN-seconds. From Password to ‘ready-to-go’? FIFTEEN-seconds. Yep, definitely an improvement over the other; power on, go make coffee, empty dishwasher, wipe counters – password time… take the dogs for a walk, make a coffee, fix breakfast… hit e-mail… 30-minutes of exercise… return; downloads and upgrades? Ahhh…fudgicles & ice cream! Go back, finish another hour of exercise (gotta get it in somewhere!) hit download e-mail, go shower… FINALLY I can start to work…well…after deleting the gagillion spam-mails…

But, is speed a good compensation for not being able to find or work with any files? Can someone please find those 65-photos I downloaded? Or wait… no, I can find them – I want to work with them and upload the video to YouTube (sorry, private access only) but all I can do is view it! I could do that before I downloaded it!

Now, now, now... what else do I LIKE about my new computer…? The screen is huge! 23-inches… or something, cause it’s wider than tall. But I can’t figure out how to turn down the brightness… (I figured out how to turn the overall brightness down to the lowest setting but white pages still nearly blind me! – can’t figure out how to fix that and still see the screen…)

LIKE…

The speakers are awesome! I can drown out the rest of the noise in my office… including the phone if I’m not careful…lol! I can say I’m looking up one particular story that I’ve been working on for nearly ten-years… maybe longer? Some of the songs in my play-list have re-opened the ‘wounds’ and I think I’m ready to finish it.

Like… I have been able to set up a cloud… (watch and see if it don’t rain…) I need to transfer certain documents from the previous computer here… I’ll let you know how that goes. (Don’t expect a miracle… Unless you’re expecting me to be alive at the end of the transfer, then by all means expect away… *smile*)

LIKE... I have a wireless keyboard and mouse now… Still debating the mouse but the keyboard is a big step up…

LIKE... Not sure what else. Too early for a full evaluation. Haven’t yet been able to access everything… I DO have a long list of dislikes, but I am TRYING to keep an open mind. I REALLY don’t want to make a replica of the old computer; I WANT to embrace the newer…albeit crappier…interface… So far? All I want to do is “enter” FACEPLANT

See you in a week… I should have reset all the passwords and permissions by then… And, Mr. Mullens? AVG? 4-hrs, still whipping through files… Really hope that’s different on/in here…

*hugs*
luv khrys…

PS: Drowning in permission slips… (Do you read every privacy statement and all the terms and conditions…? Maybe you should… or not, do you REALLY want to know what you’re going to eventually end up clicking, “yah, go ahead, put a monitor on my head and follow me around, if it means THAT much to you…”)

2013… yep, starts right off with a bang. BOOM!

AFTER fireworks… and for those who don’t know, my birthday falls on New Years Day… (I’m so lucky, eh?) So I get a double whammy! (No Whammy; No Whammy; No Whammy; STOP!…lol… that’s for those who’ll get it… lol)

I survived turning {mumble-mumble} and the earth turning 2013… my computer however decided ten years was enough of my mishandling and abuse. It broke. Normally, if something breaks we fix it or toss it. (Or practise our foul-language shouting at it…) and, usually, when things break I just move on, if I don’t have a replacement no big deal. WELL, let me inform you, this is NOT the case this time!

I have become addicted to my computer! I had withdrawal symptoms… (You know, where you sleep-walk to your computer and fire it up, typing away on it even though NOTHING is actually working…*grin*)

It’s true though, I feel lost if I can’t write daily. (I might not post what I write… but believe me at least two-five thousand words leave these fingers daily… (English teachers hated me) or DID until my ‘puter broke…)

Then, just for good measure, our internet and phone lines went dead… oh, joy… that took a WEEK for the phone company to discover the issues and FINALLY send someone qualified to repair them! (It’s a big deal to us; we operate a business and our debit machine was affected costing us big-bucks all week…) My only worry was I was missing reading the blogs! Forgive me…

Anyway… I apologise for being absent. It’s going to take me a week to figure out all the safety measures etc… in this new electronic beast. (But, PTL, yet again! My son used to sell computers so he was invaluable at choosing the ‘right’ one! Who knew a stint at a box store would result in expertise of a useful kind?!)

A HUGE HUGE THANK YOU (& CONGRATULATIONS) to Shazza for her gracious blessing offering me a nod as a nominee for “A Very Inspiring Blogger”, I’m very humbled and hope only that what I write gives you, precious reader, what you want, need or came for… I will be following the rules very soon… *hugs*

So, I will be in and out as I discover things about WINDOWS 8; which ain’t easy!!! I feel like I’ve been sent back to kindergarten and I’m the one without the paste! So, please, a prayer will be gratefully coveted; that I might not get frustrated. I have a personal unspoken prayer I’d like prayer for as well, but don’t worry if that’s not your thing… but if it is… *thank you…*

OH OH OH!!!! I FINISHED THE NOVEL THAT MY COMPUTER ATE!!!! PRAISE GOD PRAISE GOD PRAISE GOD!!!!! Now, back to the beta for a confirm it’s still somewhere near as good as the first time round! The computer crash/breaking DID NOT affect the completion! PTL!!! Oh, can you tell, I’m PDH!!!!!

I’d like to share my play list from YouTube… it’s a real MIX of styles, and stuff… it’s NOT for everyone, I listen to it… well, I made it (about two years ago? one year? six months? lol) but I couldn’t listen to it at the same time as I did anything else… (ten-year-old computer, ‘member? (okay, so I discovered it was only 6-years old, it just acted 10!)) It’s really kewl, I can now! I’m typing and listening to it play. (Wow, is it eclectic!) I have seen some of these bands in person… really incredible to sit with tens-of-thousands… *shiver* ONE of them, if you listen REALLY REALLY REALLY carefully, you MAY hear my completely off-key voice belting it out with the artist(s)… *smile* I also dare ya not to jump up and start dancin’… even if it’s only ‘bum-dancin’ (where yer butt stays on the chair but the rest of ya is wriggling… *giggle* ENJOY!)

Of course it does make it hard to get any work done…well, except for housework; can’t sit still anyway…

Enjoy (If I link correctly…)

PlayListOneUnDun  I‘m looking forward to adding new ones from a new blogger I am now following (I hope; if I did things right…ack!) (Yeah, the music is older than dirt, but it is better than what we got!)

On those notes… *grin*… I will be here again! God IS my witness!

*hugs*
